railers come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate a wide range of hauling needs. Knowing What Size Trailer You Need
Before you begin, it's important to determine your GVWR, or your "gross vehicle weight rating." This number refers to the maximum amount of weight that your vehicle can carry. This includes the weight of your vehicle, the weight of each passenger, and the weight of the cargo inside. You can locate this number on a sticker that's located on the inside of the driver's side door jamb.
Trailers also have a GVWR. Consider these numbers and your towing needs when shopping for a trailer.
Reading Trailer Sizing
A trailer's dimensions typically include the length, width, and height in feet. To determine the length, a trailer is measured from the back end all the way to the front. If the trailer has a V-nose, it is not included in the measurement.
The width of a trailer is measured from the outside, from one side to the other, and the height is measured from the bottom of the box to its top. Knowing the length, width, and height of a trailer can help you determine whether it's the right size for your towing needs.
Sizing for The Most Common Trailers
Trailers come in a wide range of sizes, but there are several that are fairly common.
Gooseneck Trailers
Gooseneck trailers have a long hitch that's shaped like a goose's neck—hence, the name. They're great trailers for pickup trucks, and they're suitable for pulling long, heavy loads.
A standard gooseneck trailer comes in the following sizes:
- 8' x 24'
- 8' x 26'
- 8' x 30'
- 8' x 36'
V-Nose Trailers
V-nose trailers are sized without adding the additional length of their pointed nose. This usually adds two feet to the overall length of the trailer.
A standard V-nose comes in the following trailer dimensions:
- 5'
- 6'
- 7'
- 8 1/2'
Enclosed Trailers
Enclosed trailers are perfect for hauling loads that need to be protected from the elements. If you'll be hauling vehicles, it's wise to make sure your vehicle will fit inside with room on either side.
Standard enclosed trailers are usually available in the following sizes:
- 8' x 16'
- 8' x 20'
- 8 1/2' x 24'
Enclosed trailers are offered in lengths as small as 8' and as long as 28'. Standard enclosed trailer lengths are:
- 10'
- 12'
- 14'
- 16'
- 20'
- 24'
